Overview
Kelimutu Lake, located on the island of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, is one of the country’s most unique natural wonders. The lake is famous for its three multi-colored crater lakes, each displaying different hues that change periodically due to volcanic activity and natural chemical reactions. These stunning lakes are situated on the summit of Mount Kelimutu, a dormant volcano, and are known for their otherworldly beauty, attracting both nature lovers and photographers alike.
The three lakes, named Tiwu Ata Mbupu, Tiwu Ko’o Fai Nuwa Muri, and Tiwu Ata Polo, represent different spiritual meanings. Locals believe the lakes are the resting places for the souls of the deceased, each lake corresponding to different souls: the elderly, young souls, and those of the evil. The surreal color-changing waters are a visual treat, and the view from the summit offers breathtaking panoramic vistas.
